{"id":235,"date":"2026-01-30T12:41:48","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T20:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/?post_type=lsvr_kba&#038;p=235"},"modified":"2026-02-19T12:50:02","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T20:50:02","slug":"epics","status":"publish","type":"lsvr_kba","link":"https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/knowledge-base\/epics\/","title":{"rendered":"Epics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In Deep Planner, epics represent features or technical enablers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The usual timeline for executing an epic can be days or weeks, rarely months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minimal structure of an epic contains the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Description: details containing business (for features) or technical (for enablers) requirements of epics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>User stories: short one-sentence scenarios representing outcomes from point of view of a user.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-level estimates: work items and their level of effort required to implement an epic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dependencies: dependencies to other epics<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To edit an epic, click &#8220;Epics->Search&#8221; in the top horizontal menu and find an epic to edit. Select an epic and click &#8220;Edit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To create a new epic, click &#8220;Epics->Create new&#8221; in the top horizontal menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High-Level Estimates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>High-level estimates represent technical work items and their level of effort needed to complete an epic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roadmap builder uses high-level estimates to understand the capacity and time needed to execute an epic.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To configure high-level estimates, open the target epic, click &#8216;Edit&#8217;, then select &#8216;Technical Work&#8217; in the left sidebar.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/epic_estimates-1024x534.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/epic_estimates-1024x534.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/epic_estimates-700x365.jpg 700w, https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/epic_estimates-768x401.jpg 768w, https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/epic_estimates-1536x801.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/deepplanner.io\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/epic_estimates.jpg 1905w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Create work items and define line items as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Name: represents nature of work (usually in a single phrase or sentence)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type of activity (i.e. development, testing, business analysis, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Level of effort: in story points or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Man-hour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">man-days<\/a> . You can configure unit of measurement in Settings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(optional) Required domain area or specialization<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about high-level estimation techniques visit the blog article <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.deepplanner.io\/planning-basics\/how-to-create-a-good-estimate-for-a-feature\/\">How to Create a Good Estimate for a Feature<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dependencies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dependencies are epics (or the related user stories or work items) that are blocking the current epic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roadmap builder is using dependencies as a constraint when building schedules. When a user story is marked as &#8216;optional&#8217; it can be excluded from schedule by choosing the &#8216;Exclude Nice To Have User Stories&#8217; checkbox in the epic sidebar settings of Roadmap Builder.
